Priest serving in Taiwan recalls meeting new Pope years ago ( 2013/03/15 )
A priest who has long served in Taiwan actually met the new Pope five years ago in Argentina. Father George Martinson describes him as a straightforward man with a common touch.

Five years ago when Martinson was in Argentina, he had his picture taken with Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He remembers Bergoglio as having a common-man style.

I only met him once, in South America. I remember he was very easy to get along with and he wasn’t wearing a red hat or a tall hat or any sophisticated clothing. I thought it was very easy to talk to him.

Martinson felt that Bergoglio’s simple approach would be good for the Church because the Vatican is often perceived as inaccessible or distant.

Many in Taiwan are wondering if the accession of a new pope signals a potential change in Taiwan’s formal diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
